Community Partnerships
Our mission at Harlem Yoga Studio is to support the physical and mental well being of Harlem by providing yoga that is accessible and welcoming to all levels, ages, and abilities. Beyond our affordable studio classes and weekly donation only community classes, we work to fulfill our mission by partnering with organizations throughout Harlem and NYC, with a particular focus on serving families, and people who work in the helping professions.
HYS offers multiple classes and workshops with schools and education programs for children, pre-kindergarten through High School.

HYS provides workshops and classes for those whose work is dedicated to helping others, such as teachers, nurses, and social workers. Our programs provide an understanding of the link between the physical practices of yoga and its mental benefits, and show participants practical ways to incorporate yoga into their daily lives and professional efforts.
Sample programs and partners:
- Introduction to Yoga and Stress Reduction Mini-workshops – Opportunity Charter School Teachers and Staff: Teachers and Staff learned basic asana poses, breathing practices, and had a chance for deep relaxation in small mini-workshops with their peers
- Introduction to Yoga and Stress Reduction workshop – Children’s Aid Society Social Workers: Staff learned various physical poses, breathing practices, and meditation techniques to help relieve stress during the work day.
- Yoga for the Classroom – Educational Alliance – Early Head Start and Head Start staff development programming: Staff learned how to use breathing techniques and basic yoga poses to enrich their early childhood curriculum and reduce overall stress levels for everyone in the classroom.
- Yoga for Stress Reduction – Staff Development Workshops – Abyssinian Head Startteachers and staff
HYS aims to build and foster healthy families and community among pregnant women and new mothers. Our goal is to support women, babies and families by providing multiple prenatal, postnatal and Baby and Me yoga classes and to become a central location for families seeking resources on healthy prenatal and postnatal care.

- Weekly Donation ONLY Community Prenatal Yoga at Harlem Yoga Studio: Open to all pregnant women in the community
- Weekly Prenatal Yoga Instruction – Harlem Children’s Zone Baby College
- Introduction to Prenatal Yoga Workshop – Columbia University Head Start/Early Head Start pregnant mothers program.
- Weekly Donation Only prenatal Belly-dancing in partnership with the New York City Prenatal Fitness Initiative
HYS offers programs on nutrition, healthy eating, and healthy lifestyles for children and adults. By providing yoga classes, programs on meditation and breathing techniques for stress reduction, Yoga dinners, and more, we offer yoga as a foundation and ongoing tool to help participants make healthy choices in all aspects of their lives within a supportive community.
Sample programs and partners:
- Community Yoga Dinners – adults and/or families enjoy a comprehensive and rejuvenating multi-level yoga class with lots of individual attention and adjustment, followed by a delicious and sustainable vegetarian dinner created by amazing local chefs
- Yoga and meditation introductory demonstrations, and “do it at home” Yoga tips – Harlem4 – Food and Climate Healthy Day Expo and Harlem Harvest Food Summit
- Weekly Free Outdoor Yoga Classes – a great way to get healthier outside and enjoy theNew York Restoration Project’s beautiful community gardens.
- Smoking Cessation Yoga Support – Harlem Hospital – Bi-weekly Yoga classes with a focus on pranayama (breathing techniques) and other stress reduction tools, to help support the smoking cessation group at Harlem Hospital.
- Yoga for Families: Yoga games and family yoga fun for Family Dinner Night with New York Coalition for Healthy School Food
HYS offers modified yoga classes for adults with various physical challenges and/or disabilities. Classes and Workshops are offered on site at hospital support groups, community centers, etc or at Harlem Yoga Studio depending on the needs of the group.
