Our theme for February is Santosha.    

The second of Patanjalis sutras, Santosha is defined as simply “Contentment”.  But the practice of Santosha is not at all simple – it is about going deep, while keeping a Broad perspective.  In our self-improvement based culture, (and our achievement based city!)  we are wired to always look for ways to fix, improve, and change.  And in a world where there is so much injustice and so many problems to be solved, the idea of simply “being content” or accepting what is wrong feels inauthentic.   But to cultivate Santosha is not to accept or ignore, it is to lean in to what we are actually felling – our frustration, our anger, our grief, while maintaining a broad perspective.   Just as we do when exploring our edge in an Asana pose,   Santosha invites us to avoid fighting or reacting to our discomfort and instead asks us to explore those feelings, to understand what is behind them, while maintaining an awareness that there is more than just this experience.  With that deeper understanding – and the broader understanding of our feelings and our situation as part of the  nurture contentment.

Coming up  at HYS. . .

Thai Yoga and Massage Workshop: 2/11/17 –  Come share laughter, partner yoga, and Thai massage.  We’ll work together to explore simple massage techniques, contact yoga poses—and the joy of practicing in community

Mindful Community in : Action: 2/12/17 – We at HYS are committed to being a space where community can be built and strengthened, and where we can support one another both on and off our Yoga mats.  Each month in our  “Community in Action” Potluck  we come together and support each-other as we work to make our city, and country more safe, equitable, fair, and LOVING.

Yoga Nidra2/19 –  Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice that helps settle the nervous system and has shown to be effective in treating insomnia, chronic pain, and other medical conditions.


CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION

Our  next Childbirth Education Intensive is February 10th through 12th. 
This comprehensive course is for expectant parents giving birth at birth center, hospital, or home.  Geared toward pregnant women (and their partners), with desire for an interactive learning experience, who want to understand birth and the many topics surrounding it.  Discussion of pregnancy, labor & birth help mom find her own readiness and connection to body, and partners find a sense of confidence in how to support her.  Newborn care & breastfeeding topics will help parents to get a sense of what they can expect as they navigate through their first weeks with their newborn.
